From Fitch, Moody's, Standard & Poor; to the likes of Trip Advisor, American Rating Agencies have increasingly become the subject of discontent/debate in the international/national, big/small business fields.
There has been a lot of disquiet about the above-
Just how useful are they?
Do they just effect self-fulfilling prophecies?
Are they just another component in the destructive nature of recession?

I would just like to add to the above.
New uses are being found for rating agencies. one of the most recent is credit rating of hospitals. Please see The Guardian- NHS plans for credit Rating Agencies to vet hospitals-by Randeep Ramesh 19/01/2012.
Seems their use ends nowhere.
