Banco Santander have bought the RBS branded branches in England and Wales and the NatWest branded branches in Scotland.

RBS still owns the NatWest branded branches in England and Wales and the RBS branded branches in Scorland.

So Santander has primarily bought the Scottish customers of RBS who live in England and Wales. Not so clever.

I wonder how Midland Bank fared when HSBC bought it a few years ago? Midland had a shocking reputation in the 1980s for foreclosing on small businesses. Did HSBC change the corporate culture of Midland? Perhaps someone out there can tell us? I raise this because I don't bank with HSBC and what little experience I had of Midland was unfavourable. I do have dealings with Alliance and Leicester and find them very friendly and easy to deal with. The prevailing view is that Abbey National has been anything but friendly and easy to deal with. So another question. Has Santander changed Abbey National? If not where would anyone suggest I go (apart from the obvious place)?

Surely Santander are buying RBS branches not RBS customers?.......the branch will become Santander and RBS will move it's customers to another branch of RBS??
Wasn't this slimming down of RBS branches part of the Government invovement deal?

I have recently had cause to send two letters to Santander complaining that they cannot provide a satisfactory level of service at their counters. In summary manning levels are inadequate to provide a satisfactory level of customer service.
I understand through the press that 600 new employees are to be brought in to rectify this basic problem.
If this kind of problem exits which appears widely understood by the media,Santander appear to be attempting to punch above their weight , and should address their fundamentals before involving shareholders in more complex investment.

I'm a bit puzzled by some of the previous posts.

Aren't Santander just buying the physical branches (i.e. the buildings) and possibly taking on the staff who work in them?

Customer accounts haven't been held at branch level since the days of manual ledgers, they're held on RBS computers. So surely no customers or accounts at RBS are affected at all ? It just means that RBS customers don't have a branch to walk into anymore.

Can someone who knows what's going on, please clarify exactly what's happening?

If you look on your RBS bank sort code that is based on a particular bank branch and it appears that all of them are closing in England and your account will become a Santander one.The easiest thing to do is transfer your English RBS account to a Scottish branch. I have already asked for transfer forms to be sent to me and my family. My experiences of Abbey and subsequently Santander have been horrendous.

Apparently RBS is writing to all their customers to tell them about the change.
