SIPP 20% Credit via Self Assessment - anyone else found HMRC to be taking weeks?

Normally I submit my self assessment, declare my SIPP contribution and as a higher rate tax payer I get my 20% cash credit back within days. This time, 8+ weeks on Ive got a message on my self assessment account telling me that they are still processing my assessment and not to contact them.

Anyone else had this? Is it to do with all the delays with government agencies like the passport office? Or is it something more sinister?

Just how far down the conspiracy theory rabbit hole were you thinking of going there?

Wild guess: Sunak told HMRC and the treasury to temporarily place all their spare cash into DeFi "yield farming" things like 3AC, Luna/Terra, Celsius, Voyager etc. This was going be going to be kept hush-hush until the big reveal of the Royal Mint NFT later this year when the plan was also to announce that all the Covid fraud losses had been made good from crypto returns (and Rishi's genius). Of course now those ponzi schemes have collapsed, the govt has a liquidity crisis not unlike all the "withdrawals suspended" crypto platforms.

It’s never taken this long and 8 feel we’ve done something wrong. I do think its people Like me who worry we may have under declared a few quid here and there that are most hard done by the system,.

You are probably right to feel like that. Much easier to chase you and me, when plenty of companies just take the pxsh when it comes to tax or declared earnings.

Paid 30 May after I filed on 1st May

They also sent me a message saying I never have to a self assessment again if I don't wish to

Lucky I guess

I wouldnt worry about it, in terms of having done something wrong. Just looking at the tax relief credits i get for my SIPP, until now they have delivered like clockwork around the 20th of every month. They havent credited the one around July 20th. They must be under stress!
