If you hsve a partner with unused tax-free allowance, some of this can be transferred tp the higher tax payer.

No.one has mentioned Inheritance Tax. Gifting and SIPPs are the key ways around this. Plenty of details elsewhere.

Where's the best place to buy sovereigns on a regular basis?

I don't trust online deliveries for gold coins, so have bought mine from Sharps Pixley in St James's Street over the counter. On a trip to London you can visit the Royal Academy around the corner, and have a very nice lunch in Bellamy's in Bruton Place, before heading home with a heavy briefcase. If you want ingots they will arrange a security van and you can bury them in your back garden. I prefer Krugerrands to Sovereigns for sentimental reasons, one of my favourite films being The Wild Geese.

I've used Sharps Pixley to buy sovereigns over the counter and by post, nice company to deal with and no problems.

The gloating over and counting of coins by candlelight has its merits, and they might possibly be overlooked by HMRC for IHT purposes (lordy, did I say that, bite mah tongue), but for large amounts a physical ETC might be preferable as safer and cheap.

I've used Bullion By Post with no problems, and all fully insured. A less glamorous experience than a visit to Bond Street, no doubt, but without the risk of getting mugged on the way home ;)... I believe Bullionvault is well regarded for larger amounts that you can store in a range of jurisdictions. I would prefer that to an ETC outside of a tax wrapper, and to reduce any risk associated with 'paper gold' (even if physically backed).
