A relative of mine worked in a care home doing office work and told me that the ones funding themselves were subsidising the local authority funded residents even though they got the same food and accommodation.

This is true. Two years ago a local care home charged self funders £1500pw and the local authority paid £800pw for exactly the same care, room etc. I won’t say how I know this other than it comes from a 100% reliable source.
