Why do I not want to join Santander, you ask?

Because their service goes beyond incompetence.

I instructed Santander to transfer some funds.
Simple, Huh?

3 months on they have still not done so.

The intervening saga has been unbelievable.

Do not go there!

As mentioned, First Direct are by contrast brilliant (pity they pay zilch interest)

I'll be moving my account shortly. Perhaps to First Direct. No ones going to tell me who I can bank with.

Yup, Roy, that is exactly my experience too, which is why I closed my account. Even that took weeks!

Thankfully I don't bank with Santander (unfortunately my daughter does and confirms the general level of incompetence), I just have a cash ISA opened when it was still Abbey. I was tempted to try to open their e-saver account recently offering a decent rate of interest, only to be confronted by questions like - what is your job, how much do you earn, who is your employer... When I questioned the need for this for a savings account, I was told it's Santander policy! Needless to say I have gone elsewhere (Natwest actually, with whom I have banked for over 40 years and with whom I have never experienced any problems!)

If you are happy with RBS - as I am - then opt out of the Santander switch by arranging a transfer to an RBS branch with a Scottish sort code.

Its simple to set up.

The RBS online banking is smooth and trouble free, the RBS staff courteous and knowledgeable so why would anyone risk all this by allowing themselves to be sucked into the mess that Santander is alleged to be in our financial press?
