If diesel cars are undesirable as private vehicles their sale for that purpose should be banned. But it doe not take a genius to figure out that the real reason for the tax is to boost council income. Hypocrisy is our national characteristic.

Some diesels are much more environmentally friendly than others - have better particle filters. Many old petrol cars just emit clouds of oily soot, as their engines and piston rings wear faster!!.

If this catches on, then I can see days of protest with diesels cars being driven very slowly round those councils with prohibitive parking.

Perhaps they would then beg them all to be parked!

There would be much less pollution if public service vehicles turned their engines off when they parked up. In every city you see buses parked, doors closed, driver reading the newspaper and big diesel engines left running and churning out filth. It's against the law but nothing gets done. If the councils really wanted to cut down on particulates here is a good place to start.

Another mad scheme by the second class brains that run our country. One cap does not fit all and as we had been told that driving a diesel was the way to go, this punitive tax is an affront to all that had made the effort to comply. This madness of sneering whining against anyone who chooses something that doesn't fit the increasing exacting model dictated by some faceless mandarins has got to stop. Surely in this day and age when we are given choices, it flies in the face of this right when we are told that we must eat the same foods, live in the same houses, have the same religion, earn the same amount of money, drive the same car and vote for the one party on offer....ah, I see where this is going! Socialist Utopia! Wake up people and stop this stupidity before people are deemed to be unnecessary!

Here's a thought...get people running, walking and cycling to their destinations where possible. This would lower the number of cars on the road, lower pollution levels, make people healthier and save them some money so they don't winge about fuel rising by 1p which only means they pay an extra 50p or so each time they fill up! Get a grip folk!

If you do high mileage you buy more fuel you pay more tax.

If you have a vehicle that has a poor fuel consumption you buy more fuel and pay more tax.

These both seem to fairly penalise those that polute more, job done without any other penalties.

CO2 wise many modern diesels are better than hybrids with a lower cost to build. Hybrids are seen as green, not necessarily.

Electric cars strangley are very favourable when the full cost of well to wheel is considered against the internal combustion engine. They of course relocate the point of generating the pollution. They are just not that viable yet.

Diesel engines tend to have have a fairly stable pollution output over their life whereas petrol engines tend to deteriorate markedly and overtake diesels in particulates. Take note that it is not the soot that you can see that is the worst pollution, the smaller particles and gaseous pollutants are the most harmful.

Just my twopenneth.

I drive a diesel and currently feel comfortable with that decision.

Yes councils are finding an excuse to generate funds. It is painful that there are so many green decisions these days that have poor grounding in fact.

Adam, and soon they will tax the individuals you described and athletes and sportsment/women and dogs (because they need daily walkies) because they are adding to the green house gases!

Next on the list are horses because they are mainly for leisure activities!
