The Elderly and Disabled were being used as but one example and one of my relatives has macular degeneration. So, like you Andrew I am speaking for a group of people who have needs that I am particularly concerned about. But, i repeat one size does not fit all!

Not just the elderly, infirm or disabled who rely on cheques. What about paying friends and relatives, often through the post. And when my grandchilden open their birthday cards and find no cheque, how do I explain I have paid it into their account via BACS? I suppose the Post Office will be rubbing their hands at the thought of all the Postal Orders they will sell - do we still have Postal Orders?

I do not think that there should be any talk of phasing out cheques until a competent system acceptable and available to ALL has been put forward. A debate needs two sides of an argument and at the moment there is only one. After all the havoc the banks have caused us recently they should not be allowed to hold us to ransom again for the sake of a cost saving exercise.

Totally agree, still in demand where I am for van hire, skip hire, setting up new bank or building society accounts, paying utility bills, sending with birthday cards etc.

I thought cheques were handled electronically as soon as presented at the bank, cost should therefore be minimal.
Also as a small business some people elect to pay by cheque.
I myself like to make payments by cheque as it gives me a permanent record in my cheque book.
For those and many other reasons I support what has been said by others wholeheartedly.

Retailers should be force by law to accept cheques.

Perhaps we should take the clearing system off the banks and make it a public utility.

We could then stay with banks who use it and walk away from those who don't.

Solved?

One more thought
Have in the past made payments electronically into an account, and the Co on the receiving end could not identify the purchase that it related to.
Electronic transfers still have their problems.

If you havn't got a decent Broadband connection or mobile signal, and rely on dial up or MacBraynes, then there isn't any alternative to a cheque. Is there?
