Does anyone have any experience of Utility Warehouse?

I did many years ago.

It promised lots of saving but was more expensive in the end, and quite difficult to exit from.

The savings just never materialised.

Mains electricity only for us (no gas). We're thankfully £180 in credit. We took a 24 month fixed tariff some 10 months ago and kept monthly payments on the higher side. Our solar panels have helped a lot this year.

In preparedness for colder days I've been getting organised. Tend to do this in the summer when demand is low and prices cheaper / on offer. An example would be buying 300 superheat logs from Wickes for £4 a dozen. Good price. Break them in half and add to logs. They're OK.

With resource scarcity and inflation still going northward, I took a larger than normal delivery of logs today (3+ tonnes) and spent 4hrs stacking them in the garage. Lovely mix of hornbeam, oak and other hardwood. I will sleep well tonight!

For gas we go to Flogas. For the past 9 months or so they've been adding a 'volatility' charge as they can't keep up with what's going on.

Boiler has been notched down a little since winter. Shorter machine washes where appropriate. Don't ever leave lights on unnecessary. As much wanting to be sustainable and responsible as saving money.

Difficult times ahead. I feel for those that are on the breadline. No sure what they're going to do.

Unsure how Octopus Renewable justify their huge price-hike.

No sun nor wind this summer?

Me too - bought an oil filled radiator the other week during the heatwave. Figured it must be cheaper to heat 1 room that way Vs whole house via radiators.

Me too. I still have room to manoeuvre / cut back (across all spends - eg a shift in food brands etc). So many have already cut back to the bare bones.

@countrymum

Why not save the cost of a new radiator and turn off existing rads in unused rooms?

Assuming you mean Octopus Energy...

while they do own an increasing amount of generation capacity, they still have to buy the bulk of their renewable power from the open market. And those with renewable power to sell aren't fussy about who they sell it to... they'll sell it to the highest bidder. So up prices go.

All the rooms are used, just at different times in the day / week.
So, for example, I'd heat bedrooms upstairs every evening, but only the study upstairs needs heating during some weekday daytimes.
And it seemed like a faff to turn rads off every am and on again every evening.
We will see - it may not work - but at least I'm prepared if it does :)

Mercifully, I can afford to heat my house out of Pension income; so, I shall carry on more or less as normal, especially in the depths of winter. At my age I am not going to freeze in my own house for frugal's sake.

I usually spend winter nights begging my wife to let me turn the heating down, and we don't even have it on all that much to begin with. Hopefully I'll win this argument a bit more often this winter.

It's not because I'm tight, I just hate that stuffy kind of heat from the central heating, and I'm prone to feeling too hot anyway. If it was up to me I'd have the heating on just often enough to stop the pipes from freezing.

So I'm hopefull that I might be less affected by rising energy costs than the average.

It's different for the old and frail of course but most of the rest if us are a bit too averse to putting on a sweater IMO!

I have found that a warm hot water bottle against the stomach/midriff under a fleece/hoodie seems to heat the whole body - it means boiling the kettle, but better than turning the heating up. Very cosy and ideal if you are sitting in a comfortable chair reading or in front of the TV.
