Looking to invest a small sum on a monthly basis, possibly long term. Any suggestions please? For those of you who invest monthly, do you just set up a DD or try to time it each month for when it falls back a bit?(I'm thinking DD).

Personally I just put in some spare money each month and take advantage of the free dealing day

As always it depends on what your goals are, what you're trying to achieve, what investment platform, what wrapper and so on gillyann. As for a fund, it's hard to quantify without this information.

Don't try and time the market if you're investing on a monthly basis. Keeping your trading costs down may work out a better use of your time. Use monthly free investing (say HL or ii) or use Vanguard when it's free all the time for normal orders. Especially if it's a small amount.

My goal is to try to beat inflation. Currently I am with HL. Would like low cost but a good return.

I think we’d all like that but it might not be so easy. If we agree that 10% inflation is the benchmark for the next couple of years, I just can’t see equities (especially a tracker) doing this with the headwinds we’ve got ahead of us. But if you want low cost, then passive is your only option.

Historically Vanguard’s VUSA (ETF) or US Equity Index (OEIC) have delivered around 10% p/a and are dirt cheap. But it’s a bumpy ride and a big bet on the US with valuations that are still high.

The holy grail of investing. Much will depend on your time horizon. As returns historically can underperform inflation for long periods.

SNP 500 - set and forget - go for an accumulation fund.

I wish had done that instead of trying to be clever.

Keep it simple.
