Norton Subscription Scam (9/1/2021)

Fish, like Phishers, never sleep! Today we have a Norton Subscription Scam. The way this works is the phisher will email you a bill and list their scammer phone number. They want you to call their number. They will then try to gather additional information from you such as credit card information or personal information (name, DoB, SSN, etc). Always be suspicious when you receive a unsuspecting bill and always check the sender address. Lastly, if you feel the need to contact the company (e.g Norton), find the customer service number for Norton using the company’s website. You can normally find this information from a quick google Google Search since the information in the email may not be trust worthy. Email details are below:

For the average user, Norton is a scam full stop.

Most people have Microsoft or Apple operating systems and both have adequate virus protection built in although annoyingly you have to manually activate Windows Defender.

Very similar to the Plusnet scam I mentioned recently:-

I have received an e-mail purporting to be from Plusnet telling me they have applied a £185.21 charge to my account and inviting me to follow a link to a refund application form.
It is a scam and Plusnet say they are dealing with it.
I am mentioning it in case it is a new one which people aren't aware of.
(It is quite genuine looking.)

The McAfee scam works by them taking the renewal a month early to 'allow continuity of service'.
There website does have a cancellation button for this early payment which if you press it instantly offers you a third off.
They paid the money back and I have turned 'auto renewal off'.
If I had my way you would have to turn auto renewal on.

I used to work in the IT industry and in retirement I have set up and/or fixed numerous laptops for people. I only ever use the built in Windows Defender and have never had a problem.
A lot of the so called free anti virus like AVG often come with stuff that you don't need which can be very difficult to remove. If you ever get stuck with a virus or malware I would recommend doing a scan with Spybot and Malwarebytes but as ever, be careful where you get it from. Similarly watch out for browsers like Chromium which looks like Chrome but is also very difficult to remove. I have seen Chromium on a number of systems and I don't know where it comes from.
One other tool I use is CCcleaner (free) which gives your PC a good cleanout of unsused files and registry items
