I understand that Enterprise Investment Schemes and Buisiness Property Relief Schemes are being touted as a way around IHT, because the money you invest is not considered part of your estate after only 2 years, as opposed to the 7years with PET's. The control of the money can also stay with you so can be clawed back if needed. Has anyone used these schemes? How do you set them up? Are they as good as they sound?

Any further information on the subject would be really useful.
Thanks

See:
http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/eis/
for general guidance. Take particular note of their comment that rules and tax treatment can change.

I have not used them, but have in the past used VCTs.

EIS schemes are generally thought to be higher-risk than generalist VCTs, but these days the VCT doesn't help you with IHT.

Consider also AIM shares (if you can get a list of John Lee's portfolio of AIM shares from his FT articles, you may find this a good start!) - not all AIM shares help with IHT.

I am a provider of these types of offering and would be more than happy to discuss the pros and cons of both EIS and BPR for IHT on an impartial basis.
As with any investment there are risks involved but there are genuine ways these can be mitigated without detriment to the rules & legislation.
These offers take advantage of legislation on the statute book and are not notifiable schemes in the eyes of HMRC.

Munchkin 1,

There is a list of AIM shares for IHT planning at www.investorschampion.com/

Please note the shares are not a recommendation; you need to do your own research. I hope that this helps.
