Bill Evans - "My Foolish Heart" (1965) [composed by Victor Young and Ned Washington (1949)]

https://youtu.be/1BwQX-sfpeo?si=t8y3-DdgcFFuE0R2

Bill Evans - piano
Chuck Israels - bass
Larry Bunker - drums

Bill Evans was probably the most influential jazz pianist of the late 20th Century. Classically-trained, he went in a delicate, introspective direction, although he could also swing. He was a great innovator, popularising rootless voicings, quartal voicings, inner voicings and impressionistic harmonies. His jazz trio was also one of the most popular and influential. Evans was a composer of numerous modern jazz standards.

His music has been described as
"like love letters written from some prison of the heart"
and
"like crystal notes or sparkling water cascading down some clear waterfall"

Evans was also the pianist on the best-selling jazz album of all time. Kind of Blue (1959)

Sadly, Evans was a heroin addict for much of his adult life, which led to self-neglect. He died aged just 51.

The concert from which the track above is taken is a classic. Now colorized, in was recorded in London in March 1965 by the BBC for Jazz 625, and shows the trio at peak performance.

Spot John Le Mesurier in the audience !

Chet Baker sings and plays "My Ideal" (1986, live at Ronnie Scott's)

Near the end - the flame burns low, but still burns bright...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2438x7iodxk

Chet Baker: trumpet/vocal
Michel Graillier: piano
Ricardo del Fra: bass

"Will I ever find the girl in my mind
The one who is my ideal?
Maybe she's a dream and yet she might be
Just around the corner waiting for me

Will I recognize the light in her eyes
That no other eyes reveal?
Or will I pass her by and never even know
That she was my ideal?"

composed by Richard Whiting, Newell Chase & Leo Robin (1930)

Some great mentions. Thanks to Raj for reminding me of Billy Ocean. He was a greatest hits fave when I was a teen. I actually revisited his stuff not that long ago to relive the memories of revising for my exams but it seemed to lack something and wasn't quite as good as I remembered. I'm wondering now if it is because I was listening to it originally on my amazing old Sony hifi with its big wooden speakers. This would probably have given the music a lot more body and depth than listening on this tinny smart phone speaker!

Which reminds me, it is high time I invested in a proper sound system for my house. Can anybody recommend something that isn't too big or expensive but which can be connected to my phone (ideally by WiFi or Bluetooth) and will sound good?

Depends on your definition of expensive. I bought these https://www.sony.co.uk/s...ice:%C2%A30-%C2%A349.99 last year. Good reviews, and if you buy two can be paired to provide stereo. Blue tooth only. A step up (to Bluetooth + WiFi and probably sound quality) could be these https://www.sonos.com/en...kGgtp0dphoCocwQAvD_BwE.

If you want an actual system then have a look at What HiFi reviews. As a minimum you will need a streamer plus some wireless speakers.

Bill Evans plays "I Loves You, Porgy" (1968, solo, live at the Montreux Jazz Festival)

probably his greatest solo...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iYEHnXEfUh8

"I loves you, Porgy
Don't let him take me
Don't let him handle me
And drive me mad

If you can keep me
I want to stay with you forever
And I'll be glad

I loves you, Porgy
Don't let him take me
Don't let him handle me
With his hot hands

If you can keep me
I want to stay with you forever
I like my man

Someday I know he's coming
Back to call me
He's gonna handle me
And hold me so

It's going to be like dying, Porgy
When he calls me
But when he comes, I know
I'll have to go"

Composed by George and Ira Gershwin (1935)

Thanks - I got this and it is excellent considering the price. It has transformed my listening experience.

Lester Young septet play "I Didn't Know What Time It Was" (1956) [composed by Richard Rodgers & Lorenz Hart (1939)]

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uDELtNLzrgo

Lester Young: tenor sax
Teddy Wilson: piano
Roy Eldridge: trumpet
Vic Dickenson: trombone
Feddie Green: guitar
Gene Ramey: bass
Jo Jones: drums

Lester Young was one of the pre-eminent tenor sax players.

He also had an intense platonic relationship with Billie Holiday for over 20 years. He called her "Lady Day". She called him "Prez" (the President of Jazz)
Young invented the language of "jive", including "cool" meaning fashionable and "bread" meaning money...

Young was an alcoholic who died aged 49, in 1959, shortly after stepping off a plane from Paris. Holiday, as she predicted, died four months later aged 44...
