Bill Evans was probably the most influential jazz pianist of the late 20th Century. Classically-trained, he went in a delicate, introspective direction, although he could also swing. He was a great innovator, popularising rootless voicings, quartal voicings, inner voicings and impressionistic harmonies. His jazz trio was also one of the most popular and influential. Evans was a composer of numerous modern jazz standards.
His music has been described as
"like love letters written from some prison of the heart"
and
"like crystal notes or sparkling water cascading down some clear waterfall"
Evans was also the pianist on the best-selling jazz album of all time. Kind of Blue (1959)
Sadly, Evans was a heroin addict for much of his adult life, which led to self-neglect. He died aged just 51.
The concert from which the track above is taken is a classic. Now colorized, in was recorded in London in March 1965 by the BBC for
Jazz 625, and shows the trio at peak performance.
