I'm as screwed as everybody else and wish I'd done differently in many ways when it comes to investing and life choices. Also, I'm sure it is obvious that I might be too small minded and ignorant to properly understand it all, so perhaps my rantings are all wrong and clever people have it all figured out!

My instincts, nevertheless, lead me to think what I have suggested and with all that said, I am leaning towards the importance of hard assets going forward, as opposed to paper and promises. I am probably quite a way behind where I'd like to be though.

Record numbers of migrants living in Britain and not working are costing the taxpayer an estimated £8 billion a year, a new report warns.

Official figures show 1,689,000 non-UK nationals are either unemployed or classed as economically inactive because they are not looking for a job.

The figure for the second quarter of 2024 surpasses the previous high of 1,676,000 recorded at the start of the year, according to analysis of Office for National Statistics data.

The Centre for Migration Control put the cost to taxpayers at £8.5 billion a year.

The think tank's research director Robert Bates told the Daily Mail: "For all the talk of a fiscal 'black hole', the Labour Government seem to be missing the glaringly obvious fact that mass migration is causing economic pandemonium.
"There is no reason for us to continue handing out so many long-term visas when we are currently having to bail out over a million migrants who are already in Britain but not working.

"This is the very definition of a Ponzi scheme, and we will only compound the problem if we do not change course soon.

"Our elderly are facing a potentially deadly winter as Keir Starmer cancels the lifeline of the winter fuel allowance, but at the same time he is doing nothing to clamp down on workless migrants."

The analysis covers people aged between 16 and 64 who were born overseas and have the right to live in the UK, but excludes students and asylum seekers.

Tory MP Neil O'Brien said the report shows that "migration policy is literally not working".

He added: "We need a system where the numbers coming are capped at a much lower level and the system is much more selective.

"No one has a problem with a small number of highly skilled workers coming here but that is not what our current migration rules are delivering and sadly there is no sign of that changing under Keir Starmer."

It comes after the UK saw a 35% drop in visa applications in the first half of this year are measures introduced by the Tories to crack down on legal migration.

A Government spokesman said: "It is incorrect to apply an average cost to migrants out of work as estimates need to take into account individual circumstances.

"Most education and welfare costs are not applicable to working-age migrants who are not students."

a) About 60% of migrants are in what are defined as high skilled or medium high skilled jobs and are more likely to be in high skilled jobs than native Brits (Labour Force survey/ONS).
b) Many migrants are in jobs like social care which is not well paid
c) 70% of NHS staff are from overseas. This is not a practice copied in most major western European countries.
d) UK has a declining birth rate combined with an ageing population
e) Lower migration means higher taxes or poorer services
d) Centre for Migration Control is the trading name of Athelney Campaigns Ltd. Its "director"is Robert Bates. The company was incorporated in March 2024.
e) The funding of this organisation is opaque.

Milky Way was 3d and Mars Bar was 6d.

Couldn’t afford a Mars, it was twice my pocket money. Andy Wallhead used to flaunt his Mars Bar and I used to hide my Milky Way.

Being a child in the 60s. Chocolate bar envy.

Just come off the phone with HL making some enquiries about crystallising the remainder of my SIPP before the autumn statement as I don't think this government can be trusted. The advisor was quite candid saying that they'd recently had a large amount of enquiries about SIPP crystallising.

Keep an eye on HL. Their crystallisation team is struggling, at least they were with mine last week.

I raised cash and completed the online form to say exactly how much cash I wanted and which investments to transfer. I got a response saying they were busy and there'd be a delay.

Well after 3 weeks I called. They said that the markets had moved and the numbers didn't work due to US investments dropping. 'We meant to message you last week. But we didn't!'

So they did nothing at all. They now agreed that the markets had moved back and now the numbers did work. It could now be actioned; but there's no priority queue so I'll have to wait again.

After a threat of a FCA complaint and the transfer of our family's money to AJ Bell they finally processed it four days later.

I'd instructed them to pay a round figure 25% out of the cash balance, leaving a couple of hundred quid behind. Oddly, they paid out every penny of cash balance so the 75% transfer was more than I'd requested. Not a problem but in essence they ignored my instruction.

Going to be painful....

It seems like certain policies consistently target the same demographic – middle-class England – who ultimately bear the brunt of the financial burden.

Benefits Street residents demand more & more making out they are hard done by , while the wealthy can afford tax advisors to minimize their contributions.

The saddest part is Labours feigned ignorance. This suggests either a lack of intelligence or incompetence, likely a combination of both.

Ultimately, we'll all pay significantly more for, at best, the same services, but realistically, we'll receive less

Shell's CEO Wael Sawan stated that the company is looking at "all options".............I wonder which other companies are

It's not the case here either - the NHS has about 17% foreign staff!

I too was just about to call out this lie, not to mention about the majority being in high paid jobs.

Yes, those in the NHS mirror the approximate numbers here, so effectively treating other immigrants.

Same old labour same danger is all I see so far as Keith rolls out his authoritarian, socialist, dispersal of wealth experiments.

All pensions are equal except some (well 2TKs for one) are more equal than others…
