Interesting to try and understand what Trump is trying to do
He obviously feels that America has been shouldering an unfair portion of the free worlds burden for far to long-ie in defence, loss of jobs overseas etc plus his distaste of generalised “wokery” that currently prevails everywhere
Possibly setting up negotiating positions as tariffs will take a few weeks to implement-leaving a negotiating time
It’s going to be rough times for all whatever the outcome is
Taking on an America with the brakes off is not a winning strategy -usually!

It looks like US interest rates will have to stay higher than previously predicted to try and hold down US inflation. It will be interesting and possibly costly to see how this pans out.

S&P futures down 1.83% at the moment.

Seems the market thinks Trump is an idiot too and it will damage US companies.

Certain Trump fan boys are rather quiet still.....🤷🏼‍♂️

Omg! S&P futures down 1.83% - that hasn't happened since 4 weeks ago!

Subsequent post by Rookie also worth reading.

Let's keep a sense of proportion here guys. There are loads of tariffs. The EU uses them extensively, as do many countries. How about those sanctions on Russia which resulted in massive losses for western, including British, companies? Wasn't Andrew in favour of that?

What's different this time...?

Whatever BS news hysteria you're glued to - turn it off.

Trump is using trade tariffs to achieve political objectives, this isn't just about the balance of payments. He made his objectives clear before the election and is using economic muscle to sort illegal immigration etc. He won't want to crash the economy during his term, which includes an important anniversary.

Hang on Rainbow Robin... Trump did pull back with delays on Tariffs on Mexico and will be chatting to Trudeau as well! The pre-markets had been down significantly more before this news (that some on the inside had spread ahead of it being made public) so our over-reaction justified.

So in light of new news it does feel like a non-event. US sector of Consumer Defensive was green and at one point up the top performer and thats remarkable considering many products or ingredients are imported. This feels very mechanically algo driven market on this news with typical sectors falling and defensive sectors rising. I suspect tomorrow we will see sectors performing more in line with expectations.

Don't forget markets are often sentiment driven and COVID was an overreaction. Everyone did well in the aftermath but the potential for a stampede was there. Perviously many hoping for an opportunity to feed money from MMF into this as there are many holding cash.

I wish Starmer would grow a pair and take a leaf out of Trump's book. The US has spent trillions paying to defend a continent which refuses to defend itself. It has allowed the likes of the Chinese to steal its technology and flood the US with cheap imports destroying American businesses in the process. Taxing foreign imports is one way of giving its own businesses an opportunity to have a level playing field. If there’s one country on the planet capable of self sufficiency, it’s the USA.

Finally, somebody else who gets it.

Unlike Andrew who has full blown Trump Derangement Syndrome.

So why didn't Trump just ask for talks with Mexico in the first place?

Why this destructive, showboating episode instead of simply phoning the Mexican President first and having a grown up dialogue?

The takeaway of course, is that world leaders will quietly know not to trust America with Trump in charge as he is prone to maverick, random and damaging behaviour.
