After the recent heavy falls of US holdings is now the time to start buying at decreases prices or wait for further falls or of course stay well out of any US holdings?

There's many profitable (domestically orientated) US companies outside of the S&P500 and the major indices.

If anyone knew the answer to that, markets would already be wherever they're going.

There will be a time. But I don't think it's now.

And may not be for several years yet.

Too many unknowns and things still playing ou. Tariffs, war, land seizures... I see he's started threatening Iran now.

Too much lunacy going on.

For me the signal will be a dramatic change of policy. Such as abandoning the trade war with Canada and Mexico, or firing Musk. That will indciate a change in tack. Until there is a big indicator I will be staying out with money ticking upwards in MMF/Fixed Income with a big bowl of popcorn.

I should really buy some popcorn stocks given the frequency Andrew consumes popcorn.

Actually I already do - recently bought Hershey's who own a popcorn brand, no wonder it has done so well lately!

The United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (which superceded the North American Free Trade Agreement ) in 2020. Has not been favourable to the US economy. Chinese companies have been investing heavily in Mexico. Integrating themselves into the global supply chain of motor parts for example. The issue is extremely complex. China has been finding ways of circumnavigating previously imposed tariff's.

Taken a leaf out of the American's copybook. The manner in which Amazon gained control over certain market sectors by effectively driving the competition out of the market by undercutting on price and remaining unprofitable for many years. Having financial backers with deep pockets that were prepared to play the long game.

If you want exposure to the stock market and, in particular, the best companies in the world, based in what is still the most dynamic economy in the world, which is currently being reformed and made more cost effective and efficient... then probably, now is the time to buy US stocks.

But it pretty much always is, or has been in our life times. If you are wanting to time the markets and make a fast buck, and need your money back next month, then possibly not. But if you're investing for the long run then, based on current information: most probably.

Thank god such a free country still exists and that we can still invest in its companies!

For someone who is still accumulating I’d say yes, now is a pretty decent time to put some money into a global tracker with 60-70% US … some top funds are now available at 10-14% below their ATH. Buy again if further drops. You may not time the bottom but you’ll certainly be buying well on the way to it…

Those heavy falls aren't general.
US value has held up well. Don't confuse US stocks with the MAG7 and Costco :)

The situation is that the recent falls were not really heavy, the SP500 today is back to where it was last October and when you look at performance over a year to today the SP500 is up almost 10%. The SP500 is nowhere near grab a bargain territory but if you wanted to buy in at last October prices then now is the time. The question of will there be further falls, I would say most likely, how far, no idea. The question of staying out of the US, as the biggest capital market in the world it deserves to be in every investors portfolio. Of course as always, on any forum, only my views and opinions.
