Why do I not want to join Santander, you ask?

They have been spending money like it was going out of fashion, trying to hide something?

Abbey National was a reasonable Building Society but never a bank and changing the name to Santander will never change the fact. Jump ship and go to Nat West!

The bad reputation for service that Santander has seems to be filtering down to their staff as well. We had an appointment at our

local branch with a view to extending the premier 50 account for a further year, which used to be £10 per month and is now £12
.
The young woman we had the appointment with was late, proceeded to talk down to us throughout the meeting, was sarcastic

when I said I wouldn't use their 'days out' included in the package and argued that we didn't have an ISA with them - until my wife

produced a letter from Alliance Leicester thanking us for the investment that she happened to have with her.

After the meeting we walked straight into Lloyds TSB Bank and opened a more useful equivalent account with them. (and a few

more pleasant peaople) Lloyds were pleased to close the Santader account and transfer everything for us.

A&L personal account dreadful - slow transfers of money, their website contains no easy means of contacting them, interest rates almost impossible to find.

RBS online business banking - Brilliant!! Intantaneous money transfer, cheques posted 1st class at their expense and appear on the account within a day. No complaints at all. I really hope this transfer doesn't include Business banking direct.

"After reflecting on the low standards of High Street banking I am moving my accounts to First Direct where there are really pleasant and professional people to talk to 24/7."

(I am not associated with First Direct other than by being a very satisfied customer for well over 15 years.) .

My internet account was transferred automatically to Santander from Alliance and Leicester a while ago and I am delighted with their performance before and after.

Because their systems are completely effective and run like clockwork, I have never had to use customer service or indeed visit a branch; I can make deposits and draw cash at any post office. I was with Lloyds and had been for nearly forty years until I finally moved to Alliance and Leicester because Lloyds charged far too much and pestered me relentlessly every year to go to the branch so they could try and sell me their products. I would never ever ever change back.

Try 'untrustworthy' or ''customer DISorientated'

After 18 months I still can't cancel my credit card! I've had three new ones sent.

I joined A&L to get the £100. So far they have opened my accounts in the wrong order which prevented me from getting my 'new customer' perks, sent me the wrong online log in details, argued with me about whether I have the wrong online log in details, and failed to pay the correct interest on my account at any point in the 3 months since the account opened.

If you value your free time and sanity, don't touch Santander with a barge pole.

Just say "I prefer to use a British bank for British service".
