Some of the reviews of on-line platforms and providers, particularly HG and AJ Bell, make depressing reading.
I suppose there will always be complexity and miscommunication when using on-line platforms; I've yet to find a question that I want answered in a list of FAQs.
Easy and "logical" navigation around these sites is an on-going challenge, subject one hopes to incremental improvement.
The chances of a good experience will depend to a certain degree on the knowledge and navigational skills of the customer, which will be variable.
Must be a nightmare working for these companies.

human nature seems to have led to people primarily using online review sites to rant about service than leave positive glowing reports.

e.g. I've had online accounts with multiple vendors for the last 20 yrs with zero issues[1] (with account handling, buys/sells, answering ad hoc questions) and I've left zero online reviews.

[1] ok may be minor annoyance with re-engineering of screen layouts

Not personally had a problem with either. AJ Bell is a bit less intuitive than HL when it comes to finding your way around but it's still OK IMO.

If anything, I find it the other way round - but that may be more to do with familiarity (than contempt?)

I like HL and iWeb. Both are intuitive to me.
