Scammers at work purporting to be from PayPal. Smartphone message asks you to click on a link, to prevent your account being locked. I don't have an account with PayPal, but some of you might.

The origin of the call comes from 44 7872 897052. I've reported this number to Action Fraud Phishing site.

I've also had an incident of identity theft fraudsters using my name and card details to set up a fake account on PayPal (probably gleaned by a rogue employee on a well known mail order website) or a restaurant used at the time. The first I knew of it was when two charges appeared on my Visa card for cash withdrawn, with two different Eastern European sounding names via PayPal appearing against the charges.

Fortunately my bank was familiar with this kind of scam, and immediately reimbursed me the amount, issuing me with a new card.

Although reported to "Action Fraud", nothing more was heard. PayPal did not respond to my communication claiming a fake account had almost certainly been set up in my name.

I would encourage hotmail users to hit:
Junk/Phishing/Report
Not sure what internal mechanism is triggered by this action but since I started using this function, I now do not receive any further repeat scam emails from the same origin.

I can confirm having received this a month ago.

I never made the connection that is was fake as I have not used the account in years. I would have mentioned it here at the time.

So I sent paypal fraud an email earlier and it was confirmed.

Watch yourselves out there - fraudsters are getting more desperate and cunning but not in Black Adder sense

Unfortunately even if you manage to get an email through to PayPal, they don't seem particularly interested. If you don't have an account with PayPal (I don't) how can you "log in"?.
Yet that's what they tell you to do, if you report to them that a scam account exists in your name.
If you can't "log in", you get no reply.
