I just don't get fancy watches.

Firstly you can't wear them if you ever go anywhere even semi-dodgy unless you look like Arnie

Secondly they boast of being submersible to the depth of the Marianas trench, I'd just take my chances with a Casio and get a new one if it gets bust

I have a Casio. It does the job of ensuring the kids get to the school bus stop on time perfectly.

However, if I was an explorer / adventurer / member of the SAS (clearly I am none of these) I would have the Breitling with the Emergency Beacon. And I would feel super-cool having it.

I don’t know enough about them to be able to make any money. I’m such a classless barbarian that I hadn’t even heard of a Patek Nautilus!

However, should anyone ever need to get money out of the country for any reason, 6 figures wrapped around ones wrist seems a great way to do it! Ashraf Ghani might have found it easier to scarper with a few of these than with crates upon crates of paper dollars! Less questions might also be asked when cashing them in in which ever safe state. Although I doubt Dubai will ask many questions about his USD cash anyway if that is indeed where he ended up!

For the mega rich, a few expensive watches in safety deposit boxes in Singapore, Switzerland, Dubai etc might be good insurance against anything going pear shaped in their home land!

Until you bump into someone with a machete who chops off your arm

There are plenty of bogus markets. I would be prepared to pay £5 for any original Picasso or Hirst or Warhol. Maybe 20p for the rarest postage stamp in the world. A Bulldog Drummond story from a century ago has the London diamond syndicate attempting to hunt down and murder a prof who has discovered how to make them for pennies.

Besides, I actually prefer a Blancpain 50 fathoms over the Rolex Sub.

I bought a 100 fathoms watch to know when to come out of the surf. It filled up on the first day. I don;t know what forces you actually get in a wave.

Interesting thread. A friend of mine has a Rolex Daytona which he got for about £11000 after being on a two year waiting list. He reckons it’s now worth nearly three times that. His problem is getting his insurance company to agree a valuation.

I believe the emergency beacon changed frequency a few years back.

You might find that during your SAS raid behind enemy lines, if you operated your Breitling beacon you'd only alert the enemy as to your presence..

smg8 - yes I heard from another friend that there is a current shortage in some watch brands and that people who have good access to dealer's supply are buying at list price and then immediately flipping in the second hand market for a large uplift. I have a couple of watches I bought many years ago that I don't think are worth much and I keep them for sentimental reasons despite having been a Fitbit wearer for a few years and now moved onto an Apple Watch...

What I don't understand is why the dealers haven't put up their prices to reflect the second hand premium?

Maybe a silly question, but why don't the likes Patek Phillipe flog their watches on ebay instead of selling them to a dealer who'll mark up the price, then in turn the buyer will simply "flip" the watch?

Prestige.

I've read tales of the marques themselves (I think it was AP that I read about) calling known good customers who've expressed an interest in a particular watch checking they've still got previous purchases because the marques don't want to be associated with "flippers".

Which seems a bit nuts.
