A bit of a broadside at Troy/PNL from Ruffer LLP?

We've seen over the years the different routes to effectively the same destination the three most discussed wealth preserving houses, Troy, Ruffer, and Capital Gearing, take. For that reason, if you're looking to preserve what you've got, I've always been of the thought 'buy all three' but perhaps in differing ratios depending upon your, and their, take on things.

Plus a chunk in RIT for me, but I see them as growth.

I own all three (CGT, PNL, RICA) in my ISA.

Ruffer’s allocation is smaller than the others because I view it as more ‘crash protection’ than a steady returns engine.

Same here, less RICA than PNL and CGT, and same reason too. That said it’s done well these past 12 months.

I'd agree (for what it might be worth!)

25% CGT/CGAR
15% Trojan Ethical
10% RICA/Ruffer

10% RCP

Can anyone suggest why the Trojan fund seems to be consistently out-performing the PNL trust?

You're comparing ACC units of Trojan to PNL but don't have the reinvest dividends toggle on on Trustnet :)

Thanks, I thought something was up - I must have untoggled it the other day and assumed it would have toggled itself back.

A decent talk from Sebastian Lyon here, covering the history of the trust and Troy, and talking about their various holdings, and also what they don't hold:

Does PNL hold actual physical gold somewhere or, apart from the miners like Franco is "gold bars" just an ETF?

Trojan suggests and ETF as it references Invesco Physical Gold.

As far as I can tell it's not an ETC, and is alluded to in these articles:

https://citywire.com/fun...vestment-trusts/a498342

https://www.investorschr...4uqAN0XDIN/article.html

Why they aren't more transparent I've no idea.

Lyon answers this in the above presentation. Troy hold gold via ETCs but PNL being a trust are able to directly hold gold bullion in an audited account with JP Morgan in London. Holding it directly costs around 0.05% annually, which is cheaper than the ETC route. He says they go there to look at it occasionally!
