During the 90s I was the king of the carpetbaggers and made a nice profit, recently a relative had come into money and asked my advice.
Because I know her well, I knew the market wasn't for her and I thought of the good old WPB.
I bought my bonds in the 90s from the discount broker Power Robbins, therefore I contacted them but they no longer sell them.
I then contacted Prudential which by the way is my favourite bond because in the past it was the best of the bunch but it is no longer available to new buyers.

My enquiry, has anyone bought a WPB recently from a discount broker and I know they are no longer in fashion but does anyone out there still have one because I think they are a decent investment for the first time investor.

Ive had a smattering lot of them and, L&G and NU (now Aviva) were the ones which generally did well.

Unfortunately they are no longer the in thing and as you say very scare. In their place seems to be the Pru Protected funds and the Aviva Guaranteed series (both of which I also have). Maybe worth looking at them.

Not the answer you were looking for but may be of help.

I've got a Prudence Bond. I bought it about 25 years ago.

A good choice, a excellent bond but unfortunately the product is no longer open to new customers.
It was my first port of call.
Thanks

I am now closing this post, I would like to thank all those who took the time to read and reply to my inquiry.
It is clear there is no room for With Profit Bonds in todays sophisticated investors portfolio.
Those of my generation who participated in the sport of carpetbagging may have noticed there are two shares in the FTSE100 today worthy of your attention.
Seek and ye shall find.

You are right Ian, there is no interest in insurance backed investments in today's more sophisticated market. I have always avoided investments from insurance companies as they have been the acknowledged experts in offering (very) high cost products with generally poor performance. Always kept insurance (vital) separate from investment, and have not bought endowments, with profits, or God forbid, whole of life policies (and I worked for a life assurance company for a time). Fortunately the hijacking of investing by assurance companies seems to be over.
