He made a mistake. As if we didn't know.

Seems to me that folk thinking the world had undergone some fundamental change during COVID were just deluding themselves in order to keep buying the bubble stocks at ludicrous prices.

As if we were going to stay locked up in flats, ordering everything online and only experiencing the outside world using the Metaverse and VR goggles, while exercising on our Peleton bikes like guinea pigs.

Mind you, many may be trapped to an extent sitting at home for 8-10 hours waiting for their EV to charge via a 13 amp socket.... it's the latest 'late for work' excuse apparently.

All pretty good arguments for "buy the index".

So what is your "excuse' if you choose the wrong index and loose money...

I am not sure its the right answer as you need skills and knowledge to make your selection and add value.

What excuse?

If I use a global index my approach right now is that I don't need an excuse.

It makes for a very easy life that takes about a minute a day to bang on a small buy and I'll always be there or there about which works for me right now.

Everyone makes mistakes but, at times, these people seem to do it on a grand scale over long periods of time whilst being paid grand amounts. The more I read about what fund managers have to say, the more I think that private investors who are willing to spend time applying common sense to what is going on in the world and in the markets have distinct advantages over them in the accuracy of their decision making, their flexibility and willingness to change course when necessary as well as their speed of execution. I suspect there are a lot of forum members here ( probably most) who, whilst making mistakes like we all do, are more successful at investing than most fund managers despite their amateur status.

2. Market cap weighted indexes that are completely skewed to a handful of shares. If you don't hold them and they are flying you won't beat the index. If you do, you might as well buy a tracker.

I still think that there should be caps on general indexes like FT100 and S&P500 to stop them becoming unrepresentative

By definition, indexes will be dominated by large companies. The level of dominance will come down to how fast these companies grew in their industries. In the past some grew quickly due to M&A but is difficult nowadays due to anti trust laws.
Tech is a bit of an outlier as a few companies grew quickly organically.

For example, Apple enjoys 75% of smartphone industry profits. In any other industry, these profits would be split among many more companies. Are you saying an investor shouldnt take part in 75% of profits in an industry? Thats an active strategy you are following by suggesting one should only invest in companies that earn 25% of profits.

In effect, you are saying you dont want to invest in smartphone, wearables and search ads industries. And thats just Apple and Alphabet.
