I'd say within about 15 years, public markets will be pretty empty, and it'll just be private companies and derivatives trades between algorithms/AI.

I always say, you read investing forums or newsletters from 20 years ago, and you won't even recognise the funds being talked about. It feels like an alternate universe. Considering stocks are really at least 15 year investments, it shows how investors are always chasing their tails and trying to play catchup to things that are quite random and inactionable.

HSBC FTSE All World Index Class C Acc

More or less the same as the FTSE Global All Cap but lower fee.

That's all I'm doing.

Out of interest, what is the intended vehicle for the bonds portion?

Hl multi index funds look interesting
Can start investing with as little as £25 per month with no dealing charge. There's the platform fee however.
For kids
https://www.hl.co.uk/fun...us-class-a-accumulation
Which can be changed to balanced and then cautious later in their life.

I think really that's just a world index with a 0.8-0.9% fee (fund fee, ETF fees + platform fee). After 20 years, that could be half your return given to HL. That's assuming they can manage it well enough to keep up with the broad market index.

So I'd go Vanguard Global All-Cap, or VWRP, on their platform. It's not the cheapest, but it's big and stable.

For my kids I have gone:

Mid Wynd
AVI Global
Fidelity Special Values
Harbourvest

I feel that gives a reasonable mix for now given where everything is set, and that the US seems quite expensive, and that having a decent bit of exposure to private markets is important. Over 30 years something like AVI has handily outperformed a world tracker in quite a variety of conditions.

Appreciate that this lot might underperform a world tracker if you just leave it completely for say 30 years, but equally I think there are reasons why it might do quite well. In any event, I also don't think it will do abysmally even if it underperforms the world tracker. As someone said earlier, it's important to do something, and so when the kids come to cash it in, there should hopefully be a respectable sum knocking around.

It will be direct gilts but nut sure which one. Something with a 5-10 year maturity, depending on the expected timing for the need for cash for paying school fees.

Personally, I don't think the public shares of private equity firms are really a substitute for exposure to private companies.

They've been good performers recent times – and no one can predict which will do better. But I think you can estimate above-market returns from PE investments, but I don't think there's any reason to expect the same from PE firms.
