Firstly the very radical action of removing tax relief on loan interest for BTL landlords which would certainly go a long way to reducing house prices and making the BTL loan market virtually extinct. It would create a lot of negative equity and be very unpopular with many property owners including BTL landlords. However it would be extremely popular with tenants and a generation of 20-30 year olds still living at home with parents as large numbers would suddenly be in a position to buy. It would also have an affect on the capital adequacy of many of the lenders which may further restrict funds. It would however stabilise the property market after a period of turmoil.

I am surprised that Gordon Brown didn't remove this anomalous tax relief and am even more surprised that the ConDems haven't removed it instead of threatening to remove winter fuel allowance and bus passes from pensioners.

I think there are wider issues to consider than just the impact of BTL on FTB.
I respectfully suggest that some of you get more facts about the PRS (Private rented sector). I respectfully suggest that some of you look at the broader picture, by looking to see what the Communities and Local Government Committee - Inquiry into Building Regulations (follow up) and private Rented Sector via CLGCOM@parliament.uk is currently doing. There was an oral session on Tuesday 5th February and another scheduled for Monday 11th February. You can watch the debate on www.parliament.uk and/or try clgev @parliament.uk. and/or Tel 020 7219 4972/1353.
You might find there is more to BTL than some of you imagine.
