I dislike spending money on cars. Sold one of our two 14 year old Focuses last week as it wasn't being used. Our remaining Focus was bought 10 years ago, age 4 from our local Ford dealer and it has been the best car we have owned. Yesterday i treated it to a £20 valet!

I am sure some people look at me and think, poor old Keith can't afford a newer/better car!

I like reliable older cars. Less on them to go wrong. I wish I could go back and unsell my 2010 Vauxhall Astra SRI. Flat 1.6 naturally aspirated engine, no fancy VDU, no ‘green tech’ - so nothing ever went wrong. Aside from the badge it was an Opel as well, made in Germany.

The Volvo I traded it in for is OK, 6 years old and nothing has gone wrong with it mechanically. But warning lights for all the emissions stuff come on from time to time, always seems to be recalls....just annoying. That said, I will drive it until it rots!

Volvos are very well built - I have one which is 25 yrs old , never been garaged and there`s hardly a speck of rust on the bodywork : )

No, Volvos WERE very well built, I had 3 of them from new. Not anymore, see recent Which? Report. Most reliable cars Toyota/Lexus and Honda.

They’re well build but over engineered. Like the German brands. Nice to drive but the extra complexity that makes them so nice means more can go wrong, and they aren’t cheap to fix. But I’d still rather live with a Volvo than a beemer, nice as they are to drive. After 5 years, the big German brands are money pits if you do any kind of mileage.

Agree about money pits. I would never choose a German made car, peoples misconception of quality and prestige. Like the Volvos of yesteryear they were very well engineered but no longer, too complicated, unreliable, expensive to repair. I’ll be sticking with Lexus, Toyota.

My Dad loves Mercs and assumes they are the most reliable car ever but has had to spend quite a bit in maintenance even though he doesn’t do much mileage.

Yea if I need to change one of our cars (might need to trade in Mrs DIY’s mini if we achieve procreation) then I’ll opt for a Toyota. Thinking either a used Corolla Tourer or a used Rav 4. Toyota’s can do 200k miles no probs. They aren’t build for fun but the reliability is something else.

Although I hear Kias are also very well built now as well.

I have generally had Fords, but once bought a (obviously) cheap Volvo 740 saloon. It was like driving an armchair, very comfortable but also very thirsty.

Cars certainly have the potential to be serious money pits. I was listening to a chap yesterday who recounted tales of woe with respect to a Range Rover Autobiography and Porsche Macan. Weeks and weeks off the road. Problems galore. Funnily enough I wasn't surprised. Amazing motors but so much to go wrong.

Talking of going wrong you really can't with the 7 year warranty that Kia offer. Mrs B's wheels are from their sister company. Yeah it occasionally rattles, but the parts are cheap, servicing is easy and we got a deal when buying new. Paid the ballon off a couple of years ago when some company shares vested!!! 65,000 odd miles later and it still happily pootles along.....

Interestingly I think I have a deal. I phoned this morning and had a really good chat with the branch manager. Explained where I was at money wise and that my visit was down to a personal recommendation (which it was). Of course I compromised on my opening position. He explained my new offer would see him make a small loss after servicing / overheads were taken into account. I do believe this was genuine as I've got a good nose for shite talkers. So I left it with him. Took a call at the end of business hours with a deal that was slightly better than I'd hope for.

So fingers crossed we will proceed......

I have owned some shite in the past and been forced to drive crap as company cars too.

Had the pleasure of some great test cars, as I worked in the industry, Bentley and big Audis.

Now retired I have an Hyundai ix35 best thing I have ever had. Bought new on finance and paid off after a month.

HKMC, Nissan, Toyota were the quality brands I worked with.
