Another vote for First Direct, joined them for the telephone banking service in pre internet banking days. I think they were the only choice. I was going to be out of the UK for the foreseeable future.

Since opened / closed Halifax, Santander, Nationwide, RBS, M&S, Tesco, Annie, Tide, TSB, Barclays, Sainsbury's, Std Chartered, Virgin, Guarantee Trust. Credit Card / Balance Transfer deals or just for the free money, Had Nat West before Midland before FD.

Called them today because the Text Message alerts menu has disapeared from the app I & wanted to change the settings - call answered before the ring tone (?) & issue sorted.

Yet another shout out for First Direct.
I have been with them 26 years and have not had any problems in that time.
Customer service is excellent a couple of times i went over my agreed overdraft in my younger days a phone call resulted in no charges.
Telephone service is prompt security is reassuring and its just a reliable efficient service all round.
The app is excellent.
Consistently top of the surveys for customer service for a long time which is reflected in previous comments.

I've been a happy customer of Metabank but I'm not sure they have been working in Uk. Maybe read metabank reviews to find out this information.

I have just opened a 1st Direct account and have had to transfer large sums of money and they have always answered the phone quickly and been ver helpful. I also got £100 as an incentive. I closed down my Santander123 as the interest rate kept going down,

I was one of the first customers of First Direct (and they are aware of that when I phone). I usually now use internet. Absolutely no problems. Deposit rates were best when I started, but no.one is good now. All my "deposit" cash is with CGT/CGAR.

I think Nationwide are hard to beat of the High Street variety retail bank. Branches are everywhere including small towns which can still come in handy. They offer an excellent and fair service imo. I use alot of the apps like Starling, Revolut, Monzo etc but I still backstop all of that use with my Nationwide account. I was tempted to try Metrobank a few years back but I think theyve been made redundent now by the app banks. Handlesbank sound interesting and I remember reading about them a few years back. Ive used alot of the retail banks but always come back to sticking with Nationwide.

From reading this thread and personal experience I think you are looking at 1: Tech banking then go Starling/Monzo maybe Revolut when they get a licence versus a more traditional experience from First Direct. 2: Niche banking then Handlesbank sound very unique. and 3: Traditional retail banking then imo Nationwide are the best option.

Having easy branch access on your doorstep does still have its advantages at times so even as a millenium thats fairy techy it surprises me I never move away from my default Nationwide account.

I nearly remortgaged with First Direct the other month and there website online engagement was superb even if I did end up using the Habito service.

To summarise, I think you will find Nationwide hard to beat for a vanilla service if you still want the option on odd occasions of real world branch access and human face to face interaction. I find it works well in partnership with the new challenger bank apps.

Have been with Handelsbanken over 10 years near London and they’ve been truly excellent and never charged me a monthly fee for my current account so free banking is possible with them. I’m not at all rich but neither am I a big risk — but whenever I call them up at the branch they know my name and don’t try to sell me anything. In all respects a very efficient banking service and decent online banking with super low overdraft rates (and low interest rates/ uncompetitive mortgage rates to match - don’t expect them to give you money when they don’t take it from you in the first place). Really worth meeting with them.

Clydesdale customer for 50 years indergoing a virgin money make over
I have never had a problem until recently
On line banking cannot login unless using virginmoney then sticks on chose paerless option then move money does not work chat window does not work phone line then get cut off
Eventualyl speak to someone who says they are aware of issue and the money has only moved once

Life is too short for this chaos
stick to FD
