It is a great surprise that those "people with wealth" haven't published the details of their generous donations to the Government or the DMO (https://www.gov.uk/guidance/voluntary-payments-donations-to-government)
That would really get the ball rolling, I'm sure, and indicate a determination for action rather than noise.

Pointless petition, merely virtue signalling. If people want to pay more tax, just do it. What they want is for other people to pay. There are plenty of ways for the wealthy (what is wealthy?) to help people without it being misspent by government.

I'm walking distance from a big HS2 site .. We've been watching endless 10s of £millions go into ultra-high-quality wooden gates and fencing, temporary buildings, paying contractors, engineers, etc. to sit around drinking coffee, buying up whole villages, which now sit empty, not to mention massive destruction of ancient woodland and habitats..

Nothing makes me keen to funnel more money to the government .. The glaring, fundamental problem is a system that operates on all these discrete levels, in which the only purpose at each level is to maximise what you're allocated .. It's what people think capitalism is, but any private enterprise allocating capital the way HS2 is wouldn't last very long.

If "the wealthy" want to pay more tax, why don't they just stop paying into pensions and skip the tax relief, or if they work in the public sector just ask for a smaller pay rise, or claim less expenses.

For wealthy business owners, skip the tax reliefs.

Or for the property wealthy, sell and repurchase their house to pay some stamp duty. No need for an estate agent.

Anyone can voluntarily pay more tax. You can literally just give extra money to HMRC.

I won’t be doing so because there is a high chance it will be wasted by some woke spendthrift on something that won’t benefit me or anyone I care about.

But anyone so inclined can simply just volunteer to pay more.

With £37bn wasted on NHS Test and Trace, why would anyone want to pay more tax, if this is the level of care and attention the funds are deployed with?

I think I'd rather have a Covid wave followed by herd immunity rather than flush £37bn down the WC.

Precisely. Face masks are mandatory in the Commons - except for MPs!!

It's Budget day, but I see no evidence that Sunak is a reforming or tax reducing Chancellor. I think the public spending well is now too deep for us to climb out of.

It's telling that today's headlines are generally "Uptick in growth gives Sunak headroom to splash cash".

As opposed to "Uptick in growth gives Sunak headroom to repair public finances and protect future economic stability."

One of the signatories (a former Blackrock trader) on BBC R4's Week In Westminster this morning

(somewhere in the middle of the programme).

It's a bit "millionaire calls for more tax on billionaires".
