@Harry Trout - What is the best way for a retail investor buy say a Treasury 5% Gilt ?

Hi Martyn

I bought mine through Hargreaves Lansdown though I believe most platforms allow you to trade them. I'm not sure I get the best price there but Gilts are free for me to hold thereafter because I am through the £200 per annum cap for a SIPP.

Here is a link to their page on Gilts ....... Gilt Page On Hargreaves Lansdown

Others may wish to share their experiences to nudge you in the right direction. @MrGL buys Gilts for his Dad and is knowledgeable on the subject - if he sees this he may reply .......

Cheers

Harry

Through your platform. Gilts are traded like any other listed security on the London Stock Exchange.

The stock ticker is

TR25.Z

But some gilts (and bonds) can only be dealt by phone, and HL charge 1% for this,
albeit with a minimum charge of ??£20 and a maximum of ??£50.

Depends on the platform. With X-O you can trade any LSE listed stock online.

Good morning all, here is my monthly summary

Feb 23 Transactions Summary

It looks busy but the sales in my GIA are just making sure I capture the annual CGT allowance, details are up thread.

Overall, pure cash is now 33.0% but if you add back my recent forays into Gilts and Money Market it's actually 40.9% which is around where I've been since the heavy selling of January 2022. Still cautiously positioned in other words.

And here are the numbers for the Share Portfolio, my separately measured folio of individual stocks .....

Thanks Phil

Agreed, it's a pity that KL is no longer on the forum, Bulldog is a miss too

Cash has been ok for me and so I'm glad I stuck to my guns. With equity markets trending sideways and cash / cash "equivalents" now paying better returns than they were then my approach is to be patient for a more decisive move up or down.

I've discovered over the last year that I'm enjoying learning about managing risk for a better night's sleep !!

Best of luck

Harry

I'm sharing this as a draft and a work in progress, I think it may help me with position sizing my portfolio of individual stocks

The business stage structure below is loosely based on a Twitter post by Brian Feroldi who is a good follow there.

The idea is to work towards a framework rather than anything too hard and fast. For example, this exercise has helped me to frame the recent partial sales of Apple, Microsoft and Nvidia which were way too big to be comfortable in my mind.

Amazon is a similar problem, currently 6.9% but I think whereas profit growth was assured (category 4) it's now really category 3 as fundamentals have moved backwards. So likely to trim soon. Yes I know, stable door - horse bolted and all that .....

Wish I'd done something like this yonks ago

Have a good weekend all

Never been comfortable with Amazon. Without the good fortune of AWS in the early 2000's. The retail division has struggled since inception. Social responsibility doesn't figure high in their working practices. Unlike the RyanAir model not as easy to keep a lid on operating costs. A company that needs to be split into 2 to realise the value for shareholders.
