Chet Baker (trumpet and vocal) [1987], composed by Elvis Costello

[The subtitles are slightly off in this moving video montage. True lyrics below]

Almost blue
Almost doing things we used to do
There's a girl here and she's almost you
Almost

All the things that you promised with your eyes
I see in hers too
Now your eyes are red from crying
Almost blue

Flirting with this disaster became me
It named me as the fool who only aimed to be
Almost blue

Almost touching it
will almost do
There is a part of me that's always true
Always

All the things that you promised with your eyes
I see in hers too
Now your eyes are red from crying

Almost you
Almost me
Almost blue

Yes, the discussion about covers is interesting and I've noticed all this before myself.

You have the ones where the covers are more famous than the originals. Some of the great songs by The Beatles on the first album, like "Twist and Shout". I posted a video above called "It's My Life" by Talk Talk, however, the cover by No Doubt from the early 2000s has three times more views on YouTube. All Along the Watchtower by Jimi Hendrix - a Bob Dylan song.

Sometimes these covers are much better than the originals.

A classic of this type for me is Born to Run. The original by Bruce Springsteen is a bit lacking in energy. Frankie Goes To Hollywood released a far more punchy version...

But sometimes the earlier, less well known version is far better, like aforementioned It's My Life by Talk Talk.

Sometimes I like both original and cover equally. Great example of this is A Taste of Honey. The Beatles version is brilliant, but the one by Lenny Welch is just... so good. 1962 but has that flavour of the decade before. Quite a weird song really...

I'm not even sure if Lenny Welch was the original version. That's the thing, there are a lot of songs that have so many covers that it is hard to tell.

One such example is I Fought The Law. As far as I know the original version was by The Bobby Fuller Four, probably my favourite version, but I also like the versions by Buddy Holly, The Clash and... Colin Farrell. The original:

Favourite cover that is quite different to the original: Mr Tambourine Man by The Byrds...

Yikes, I've never seen a billion views before.

Original is better.

Best cover...? This gets my vote (if it counts as a cover when it's a traditional song with no obvious original version.

Phil Lynott was so talented (and gorgeous!), and gone far too soon. I remember persuading my parents to queue up for tickets to see Thin Lizzy live while I was at school - happy days.

"Whiskey in the Jar" is a very, very old song, but I believe the Dubliners were the first to record it, in 1968.

Many other greats from The Dubliners...

"The Spanish Lady"

[the reference to Napper Tandy's house is to the 18th Century Irish Revolutionary. Contrary to imagination, most of the early Irish Revolutionaries/Separatists/"terrorists" were Anglo-Irish Protestants and Nonconformists...]

"Dublin in the Rare Old Times"

"The Foggy Dew", with Sinéad O'Connor and The Chieftans

[ powerful ! ]

https://www.youtube.com/...sktop&v=keWnPZOd2cw

As down the glen one Easter morn
To a city fair rode I
There armed lines of marching men
In squadrons passed me by

No pipe did hum, no battle drum
Did sound its loud tattoo
But the Angelus Bells o'er the Liffey swells
Rang out in the foggy dew

Right proudly high in Dublin town
Hung they out a flag of war
'Twas better to die 'neath that Irish sky
Than at Sulva or Sud-El-Bar

And from the plains of Royal Meath
Strong men came hurrying through
While Brittania's Huns with their long range guns
Sailed in to the foggy dew

Their bravest fell and the requiem bell
Rang mournfully and clear
For those who died that Eastertide
In the Springing of the year

While the world did gaze with deep amaze
At those fearless men but few
Who bore the fight that freedom's light
Might shine through the foggy dew

And back through the glen, I rode again
And my heart with grief was sore
For I parted then with valiant men
Whom I never shall see n'more

But to and fro in my dreams I go
And I kneel and pray for you
For slavery fled, O glorious dead
When you fell in the foggy dew

Mary Fahl sings "The Dawning of the Day"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qRh3NL0lc68

This morning early I walked on
While my darling was in a dream
The last sweet days of summer bloomed
And dressed the trees in green
When soaring high in the gleaming sky
From far across the bay
Came a fearsome roar from a distant shore
And the dawning of the day

Then I called my men to follow me
Knowing well that the view was dim
Though tired and worn, how they fought all morn'
As time was closing in
And my heart was sad though sore with pride
For brave lads all were they
For as angels fly, how they climbed so high
On the dawning of the day

But the edge is moving nearer now
Inside the fading Sun
And calling, calling out to them
My brothers, one by one
But only dusty silence sounds
The ashes float away
As the twilight ends and the night descends
'til the dawning of the day

Forgive me love, I'm going now
So very far away
When darkness falls, only think me near
And do not be afraid
And please don't grieve when I am gone
Abide in what remains
'til the shadows end and we meet again
On the dawning of the day

For when shadows end,
We shall meet again
On the dawning of the day
