Britannia the helmeted female warrior holding a trident and shield was an image first used by the Romans.

The Roman called this occupied province Britannia which became Anglia after one of the victorious invaders - the Angles, a Germanic tribe who settled during the 5th and 6th centuries. Around 1000 AD it morphed into Engla land, from which came England.

The British ethnicity or English ethnicity descended from the West German tribes (Angles, Saxons, Jutes) and the Celtic people who were collectively known as Anglo-Saxons. The Danish Vikings and the French-speaking Normans were later assimilated into British culture after their respective invasions of Britain.

English is a West Germanic language that originated from Ingvaeonic languages brought to Britain in the mid-5th to 7th centuries AD by Anglo-Saxon migrants.

Queen Victoria was the daughter of Prince Edward, Duke of Kent and Strathearn (the fourth son of King George III), and Princess Victoria of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld. Victoria married her first cousin, Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha.

House of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha became Windsor as the result of anti-German feeling during the First World War - in 1917.

So, what does it mean to be English?

Judy Dench said she is “hopeless at my own company” and added that she spends a large amount of her time chatting to her partner, conservationist David Mills, 81, and parrot Sweetie, who she said has some choice words for her.

Dame Judi said: “We had a long chat just now. You shouldn’t ask what she says.

“She says ‘you’re a slut’, ‘you’re a slag’, she has said ‘Boris Johnson’ but she didn’t get that from me.

It could have been much worse. Sweetie might have said "Nigel Farage."

All reminds me of playing the old "Britannia" boardgame years ago.

Kinda Risk-like but more tied to/driven by the successive waves of migration/invasion that swept these lands. Always liked the fact the Celts were (usually) the great survivors who'd still be hanging on in the Hebrides and far north after multiple waves of ethnic cleansing had ravaged the mainland.

Designer's historical notes at the end of https://images-cdn.fanta...tania_Revised_Rules.pdf are a good read.

Donald Trump - Keir Starmer has done a "very good job thus far".

Wow.

Praise from Caesar is praise indeed !?

Yes, that's an odd development.

Of all people, I'd expect Trump not to feel any pressure to provide a correct 'diplomatic' answer. Does he really mean it? Perhaps it doesn't matter as he seems to change his mind a lot. Or maybe he is letting Musk play bad cop so he can get whatever advantage is available from keeping the UK on side. He might also be lulling him into a false sense of security before blocking the Chagos deal. I suppose it's a case of watching actions rather than words (as is the case with most politicians).

This is straight from the Trump playbook. Absolutely expected, even though it seems odd. He definitely does not think what he is saying. Part of the tactic involves praising those he is working on. That's an interesting idea about the good cop, bad cop. Could be some of that going on although I'm not sure how planned that was, or how much Trump and Musk would be coordinating.

What is interesting about this is that they obviously have the UK and its government in their sights. Good.

You are probably right - it's an opening gambit / tactic of some sort. I suppose in a sense it doesn't matter - his answer to the question carried no consequence, so there was nothing to be gained from saying that Starmer had done a bad job, and nothing to lose from praising him.

I could never be a politician!

Another angle is that when Trump praised Boris Johnson during the then leadership contest in the Tory Party, it was being reported by the likes of the BBC and the Left as: "if Trump is supporting him, what does that say about Boris?" So perhaps it is double bluff trolling that undermines Starmer amongst his own base... or endears Trump to people who usually hate him. Pro Starmer NPCs being an example... unclear. Not easily predictable. Actually not that politician-like, unless we look back to somebody like Bismarck.

It is better to view Trump as a businessman and developer first, a master head worker second, and a politician third.

Great speech from Milei at the recent WEF meeting:-

Javier Milei, President of Argentina | World Economic Forum Annual Meeting 2025

Quote:
"Today, few will deny that 'winds of change' are blowing in the West."

Hopefully they are.
